I have been asked to critique a piece of related media about storage space/computers. Click on the picture to read what I am critiquing.
I have also included a video that I have authored and I will discuss the relevance to the medium of storage devices.
Discussion & Critique
Discussion
This is a collaboration video with one my friends for a student organization on campus. We shot scenes of the video using a high-end DSLR camera in full 1080p HD. We used a series of three SD cards that were 16 GB each for data storage. Because of our budget at the time, we could not afford higher end quality SD cards.
During filming the video, each person had about 30 minutes worth of film and at the end of the shot, it would take up to about 7 GB of storage space on the SD card. We had a total of about 20 people filmed and only a few scenes were used as space was limited on uploading to YouTube and rendering the video through an editor.
We spent about a total of three full days to complete filming because with about 7 GB a person, we had to swap the SD cards at the end of every second person.
The cards were of class 4 so the data transfer rate was slow. The process of uploading the content onto the computer only to create space on the SD card again was time consuming as an upload per card took about an average of 6 to 12 minutes. Because of the high quality of the video the data size increased.
Although HDDs and SSDs could perform a lot better, they were not designed for products such as the digital camera or any other smaller devices. Because the SD cards are about 40 years younger than the HDDs and SSDs, the price per GB is relatively still high. Eventually the price would drop to what the rate of HDDs are, $0.05/GB and more space would be more affordable.
If we had one 64 GB class 10 SD card, we would have finished filming in about one and a half days. We would be able to film about 4 to 5 people per card and spend only about 4 to 5 mintues transfering content onto the computer. This is why the advancement of storage technology is important as it not only helps save time but it also can store larger amounts of data without having to sacrifice mobility since the physical size of the device would decrease or stay the same as the storage space increases.
Critique
The article blog is about computer memory upgrades and is aimed at an audience that is interested in how to increase performance on their computer and if they should do it or not. The layout of the website is nice and organized in that the content is right about the center of the page and advertisement is placed on the right side of the screen. However, it does not really promote grabbing the reader's attention into the content but rather more towards the advertisement as it is sticking close onto the content. The reader's eyes become distracted by the pictures of the ads. In my opinion, the ads should be moved as far right onto the screen and as far as possible away from the content. Another thing to consider is the autoplay on their video. It deters the reader from going straight into the main point of the page since the video is not related in the topic of upgrading computer memory. Aside from the ad and video distractions, the content should be a little more centered on the page so that the reader's eyes are at a comfortable level.
Despite the distractions, the content if well informative for even the basic of users when it comes to upgrading computer memory. The artricle dives straight into the benefits of upgrading the RAM (random access memory). It informs the reader that eventually a RAM that is far more than enough now would become the bare minimum in running applications. The article leaves nothing behind, every detail necessary to inform the reader is there. Because of its close details in content, the article establishes credibility in what they are trying to say to the audience. Pathos is reached in ways that as the audience continues to read, the more confident the reader becomes in understanding what they should do; whether an upgrade is needed or not. The audience can feel this way because the article provides logistics - the logos - in proving their argument that upgrading is not all that necessary even if in a couple of years, it would be the bare minumum. Visual data is shown for the audience to understand what the author is trying to say rather than leaving the audience wonder whether the information is made up or not.
PCWorld is known for their community in how-to videos, product reviews, and discussion threads where users around the world can discuss about any topics related to computers. The community is a mix of amateur computer enthusiasts to hard core professional computer geeks that have been at it since the 1960s. Even though the page layouts are a bit distracting, the audience of the website does not become weary about their authenticity because of their consistency is providing accurate and useful information over the years.
